I have been trying out PiHole For the last month or so.

I installed pihole on Kali Linux Light 32 bit VM 2016.2 from
https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/
(I know probably not the smartest choice)

I did not install any of the pen-tools, I fully updated it with with
:~# apt clean && apt update && apt -y upgrade && apt -y dist-upgrade && apt autoremove

The only package I had to install was curl
:~# apt install curl

root@Pihole_kali:~# uname -a
Linux Pihole_kali 4.9.0-kali3-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 4.9.13-1kali3 (2017-03-13) i686 GNU/Linux

Installing Pihole could not be have been any easier 
:~# curl -sSL https://install.pi-hole.net | bash

Thats it your ready to go just point your DNS to the IP of Pihole and surf the interwebs.
